While many employers and institutions (including the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor) prefer to work around hours rather than salaries, we have opted for the latter to give you a better idea of the real annual costs of your employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"simple-formulas\">Simple formulas to calculate the cost of employees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Calculating your labor rates is a <strong>complex exercise<\/strong> that requires a careful examination of different <strong>variables<\/strong> like the <em>industry<\/em> you belong to, the type and characteristics of the <em>role<\/em> you are planning to cover, the <em>location<\/em> of your company, and the kind of <em>benefits<\/em> and <em>legal<\/em> expenses you are willing and required to pay for that employee. While this may be intimidating at first, there are <strong>some basic variables<\/strong> that will always affect your labor rates. In addition to the base salary, you need to cover other things like <strong>employment taxes and benefits<\/strong> (e.g. health insurance, 401(k)). While this calculation is complex,<strong> there are some simple formulas<\/strong> we can use to have an idea of the actual annual cost of an employee. We chose the following 2.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with <strong>Joe Hadzima, a Senior Lecturer at MIT<\/strong>&nbsp;who provides a <strong>simple formula to calculate the actual cost of an employee<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/e-club\/hadzima\/how-much-does-an-employee-cost.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Hadzima<\/a>, once you have taken into consideration basic salary, taxes, and benefits, the actual costs of your employees are typically somewhere between 1.25 to 1.4 times the base salary. However, we will now explore the <em>essential ingredients<\/em> you need to know in order to calculate your labor costs. We will come back to these numbers to see how they compare with our findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div  class=\"montserrat-font my-5 mx-auto bbl_definition_snippet\">\n  <div class=\"mb-4\">\n    <div class=\"bbl-ds-item question mb-3\">\n      <h2 class=\"h4 mb-0 mt-0\">What is the cost of employee benefits called?<\/h2>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"bbl-ds-item answer\">\n      <p>The cost of employee benefits is often referred to as &#8220;<strong>benefit expense<\/strong>&#8221; or &#8220;<strong>employee benefits expense.<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0These terms refer to the total cost that a company incurs to provide benefits such as health insurance, retirement contributions, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, and other perks to its employees. The expense is a significant portion of an employee&#8217;s total compensation, beyond their base salary.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"factors\">Factors that affect base salary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>base salary<\/strong> is affected by some of the factors we mentioned at the beginning of this article. <em>Location<\/em>, for instance, affects salaries in a decisive way even if we are considering the same role. However, a comparable salary in San Antonio, Texas, where the cost of living is lower than in Miami, would be around $30,769. Again, this calculator is useful in terms of providing an indication of how your salary will compare in different cities across the country, taking into consideration things like housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, and health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div  class=\"montserrat-font my-5 mx-auto bbl_definition_snippet\">\n  <div class=\"mb-4\">\n    <div class=\"bbl-ds-item question mb-3\">\n      <h2 class=\"h4 mb-0 mt-0\">What factors affect base salary?<\/h2>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"bbl-ds-item answer\">\n      <p>Several factors can affect the base salary of an employee in the U.S., including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Job role, tasks and responsibilities:<\/strong> Different jobs come with different responsibilities, and this affects base salary. A managerial position will often pay more than an entry-level position in the same field.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experience and skills:<\/strong> Employees with more experience or specialized skills often command higher base salaries than those just starting their careers or with less specialized skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Education (qualification)<\/strong>: Higher levels of education can lead to higher base salaries, especially in fields where specific degrees or certifications are valued.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Salary ranges often reflect the cost of living in a certain area. This demand-supply dynamic is a key driver of salaries in the labor market, often leading to higher compensation for professionals with rare, sought-after skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Company size:<\/strong> Larger companies often have more resources to pay higher salaries than smaller ones. Companies are required by law to cover social security, Medicare as well as state and federal taxes. Let\u2019s look at it in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/onpay.com\/payroll\/process\/what-are-fica-tax-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FICA tax<\/a> is a mandatory payroll deduction that serves to cover Social Security and Medicare. The employer needs to cover 6.20% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. FUTA &amp; SUTA (unemployment insurance)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5\">Employers need to pay for both the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) and State Unemployment Tax Act (SUTA). As far as FUTA goes, companies are only required to pay 6% of taxes for the first $7,000 earned by any employee. That said, most companies will pay $420 annually to cover federal unemployment. The only exception to that rule is California, where companies need to pay 2.1% or $147 annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, SUTA (sometimes also referred to as SUI &#8211; State Unemployment Insurance) is calculated in a different way and can change significantly across states. Generally speaking, however, SUTA oscillates between 2.7% and 3.4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Workers\u2019 compensation insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to insure employees against injuries, <strong>every employer needs to pay for workers\u2019 compensation<\/strong>. Considering that risks are highly different among industries and specific jobs, this cost varies a lot. To calculate workers\u2019 comp, each type of job is covered with a specific rate for every $100 of salary. In fact, <strong>health insurance represents the highest cost of all benefits<\/strong>. According to data discussed by Hadzima, health insurance for an employee making $50,000 a year will cost between $2,000-$3,000 (single employees) and $6,000-$7,000 (for families).
